We have only four accounts of bridges built over railways - at Holme, Offord & Lincoln on the east coast line of GNR, and the one built at Dundee in 1872.   The bridges at Offord was built by John Harper about 1887 and appears to have been constructed of wood.  In this photograph from Offord, the main cables are attached to the railway aspect of the towers, as are the deck cables.  The archor cables are attached to the landward aspect of the towers.  It is not known when this bridge was removed.  The towers presumably gave more stability to the span over the increased distance of the four tracks, and this contrasts interestingly with the bridge at Holme. It has been suggested that the bridge might have been built to accommodate the quadrupling of the track which was completed around 1887

The bridge was built at Holme, a little further north on the GNR line, earlier, maybe around 1880
