Harper Bridges

Trentham, 1893

R. Trent at Trentham.

From George Menzies, Commissioner to His Grace the Duke of Sutherland, Tentham Hall, Trentham, Staffordshire

"The Suspension Bridge of 70 feet span, which you recently erected for the Duke of Sutherland, in the gardens at Trentham is a thoroughly satisfactory structure. It is light, graceful in outline, and withal strong. It serves its purpose well and conveniently."

This bridge was replaced in the 1930's by an art deco stone bridge, placed a little downstream, when the gardens were developed for the  public. About the same time the house was demolished.  The pylons were of cast iron and the anchorages serve both the main cables and the deck.
