We visited Keswick in September 2005 but our enquiries did not, at first, get us anywhere. However, we later followed up a lead and made contact with Mr Jeff Taylor who gave generously of his time and effort in researching the bridge.

He sent the following from the Lakes Guardian & Keswick Visitor
'The "Lowther" Suspension Bridge - This new bridge was formally opened on Monday night (18.07.1898) by Mrs R.D.Marshall - Mr Highton said they might congratulate themselves in having acquired a bridge which in no way detracted from the scenery but rather opened out one of the prettiest river view on the bonny Greta. It would be useful to workmen, the visitors, and the people generally. For the site they were indebted to the generosity of Mr Marshall (who had also given a handsome subscription) and the Fitz Trustees. The bridge had been made by Mr Harper of Aberdeen, and the design and arrangement spoke volumes in its favour. The cost had been considerable and there was still about £60 to raise and those who had taken on the responsibility of cost would be glad to be relieved of a liability which should not be theirs. He asked that all adults do what they could to discourage injury to the bridge. Mr Lowther handed a key to Mrs Marshall and also presented her with a photograph of the bridge as a souvenir - Mrs Mashall then declared the bridge open, and after the cheering had subsided Mr Marshall returned thanks for the compliment which had been paid to Mrs Marshall. The party having crossed the bridge to the road behind the Keswick Hotel, Mr Wood begged to publically acknowledge their indebtedness for the liberal support that had been given to the committee, as well as to Mr Lowther for his earnest and persistemt work in the fulfilment of a pedge, and to Mr Hodgson for his advice and assistance in the placing of the bridge. Mr Lowther briefly responded. He had been reminded of a big contract; but one bridge was there and another would come in due time. The Rev J.N.Hoore thanked Mrs Marshall for the gracious way in which she had performed the opening ceremony and cheers followed.'
