Harper Bridges

Shocklach,R.Dee, Cheshire, 1871

Another early bridge was over the Cheshire Dee. This bridge is likely to be the one seen in the 1881 map crossing the Dee near Shocklach Green for Sir Wiulliam Matthias Williams Glynn of Rhuabon, on behalf of the Wynstay Hunt.  It was called the Hunting Bridge.   It is still reacalled by some of the local people, who knew the bridge in childhood.  A local farmer kindly took us to the point on the bank where remains of the eastern footing may still be seen (SJ 425503), 'high and dry'  some 30 yards from the river that has changed its course since the bridge was in use.  The bridge fell into disrepair, probably in the thirties, and the local landowner decided not to maintain it further.
