Harper Bridges

Dundee, 1872

Built at Ravenscraig, the home of Col F.G.Sandeman, a local millowner.  The bridge was of span 50 feet and was made entirely of wire, with posts of cast iron.  It was exactly the same as the bridge at Birkhall built 8 years later.  It allowed Col Sandeman access to the shore between Dundee and Broughty Ferry, across the route of what is now the main east coast line between these towns.  This is the earliest known example of this design of bridge.  The cast posts contained within them the Harpers Patent device for tensioning the main, deck and anchorage cables.  The deck was of woven wire.

The bridge was removed somewhere between 1903 and 1923
